Yousuf

Yousuf is a transliteration of Yusuf, the Arabic form of Joseph. The older Hebrew name is traditionally understood as “God will add.” In Islamic tradition Yusuf is a prophet, and his story has a close relationship with the biblical account of Joseph, including the interpretation of dreams.

Yusuf, Yousef, and Yousuf represent different ways of writing the Arabic name in the Latin alphabet. Their differences do not create new meanings or require different religious associations. Joseph provides the familiar English counterpart for a family comparing forms across languages. Yousuf preserves the Arabic name’s recognizable shape while remaining distinct from the spelling normally found in English Bible translations.
