Yusef

Yusef is one of the spellings used to represent Yusuf in Latin letters. The Arabic name belongs to the same family as Joseph and leads back to a Hebrew expression meaning God will add. Yusuf is an important figure in the Quran, where his story includes separation from his family, hardship, and eventual reunion.

The spelling has an additional cultural life through bearers such as jazz musician Yusef Lateef and poet Yusef Komunyakaa. Yusuf and Youssef are related forms that reflect different transliteration traditions, rather than names with unrelated meanings. For a family moving between Arabic and English, Yusef offers a familiar written form while retaining its connection with a story shared across several religious traditions.
