Braulio

Braulio is an old name used in Spanish and Galician tradition, with a linguistic origin that remains uncertain. Its documented history is clearer than its proposed translations. The name was borne by Braulio of Zaragoza, a seventh-century bishop and scholar whose life places it firmly within the religious and intellectual world of early medieval Spain.

Braulio was associated with Isidore of Seville and is remembered as a patron of the University of Zaragoza. That gives the name an unusually strong scholarly connection, as well as its history in Christian naming. The Portuguese form is Bráulio, while the unaccented Braulio is familiar in Spanish. Its value lies in that established heritage even without a securely agreed literal meaning.
