Montserrat

Montserrat takes its name from the mountain near Barcelona, whose jagged outline explains the Catalan meaning “serrated mountain.” It belongs to a tradition of names connected with a particular place, rather than being a general word for mountains. The landscape is central to its story and gives the name a precise geographical connection.

Montserrat preserves the spelling of that Catalan place; Monserrat is a related version without the first t. Montse offers a much shorter everyday form. The full name has a distinctive consonant ending that sets it apart from many girls' names ending in a. For a family with a connection to Catalonia, that place history may matter more than a literal English translation.
