Remus

Remus is a name from the traditional story of Rome’s beginnings. He and his twin brother Romulus are said to have been nursed by a she-wolf before growing up to play a part in the city’s foundation story. The original meaning of Remus is uncertain; a possible connection with an old word for twin is one scholarly suggestion.

The brothers’ story ends in conflict, with Remus killed and Romulus associated with the new city. That makes the name’s mythology more complex than a simple meaning such as founder or hero. Remus has continued to appear in later storytelling, giving it a literary life beyond ancient Rome. For parents who enjoy classical names, its concise form carries an especially specific legend and a clearly identifiable twin connection.
